SHSU’s New Criminal Justice CBE Degree: Check Your Applied Credits First

Online Programs

SHSU’s fall 2026 criminal justice CBE launch may suit adults with occupational learning. Check the applied-credit requirement, course formats and price rules.

Sam Houston State University announced a fall 2026 launch of its competency-based Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Criminal Justice. The format lets students progress by demonstrating what they know through applied work. For adults who bring relevant training or technical education, it creates a specific degree-completion option worth examining. SHSU’s launch announcement

The useful comparison starts with your record: what training can satisfy this degree, which courses remain, and how those courses will be delivered and priced. Those answers are more useful than a general promise of flexibility.

Start with the learning you can document

SHSU identifies technical coursework, occupational training and military education as possible sources of applied credit. Examples include technical associate-degree coursework, law-enforcement certifications, verified corrections training and learning documented on a Joint Services Transcript. The university reviews these records for degree fit. Program information

This makes the pathway especially relevant to someone whose strongest prior learning comes from a technical or occupational background. Gather transcripts, training records and certificates before comparing it with programs that may use the same learning differently.

The CBE catalog requires 36 approved applied credits for graduation. It permits entry before all 36 are complete, with approved credit earned progressively; other admission rules still apply. Ask how your existing learning fits this category and how any shortfall would be completed. Degree catalog

Check the credit total for your record

The catalog lists a 120-credit degree and limits community or technical college transfer to 66 semester credits. Its footnote describes 126 credits when prior credit is missing for CRIJ 2362 and one of CRIJ 2364, 2365 or 2367, rising to 129 if CRIJ 2361 is also missing. Ask SHSU to show which total and requirements apply to you. Catalog footnotes 1 and 4

A useful evaluation should identify each remaining requirement, including any institutional-credit, upper-level and grade requirements. If your prior courses only partly match the introductory sequence, ask for the treatment of your exact combination rather than estimating from a headline total. Our transfer-evaluation guide explains what to look for.

Confirm which remaining courses use CBE

Not every eligible elective is currently offered in the CBE format, according to the catalog. Ask an advisor for a remaining-course list showing CBE availability and the schedule of any other courses. Catalog footnote 5

That is an important planning step if your job requires flexibility. A degree-level CBE label cannot tell you whether your particular remaining course mix fits your working week. See our self-paced program guide for questions about pacing and support.

Look beyond the advertised price

SHSU’s fall 2026–spring 2027 CBE tuition schedule lists $178 for one semester credit for a Texas resident and $606 for a nonresident. The amounts include tuition and the program fee. It says nonresidents in the criminal-justice CBE program who take no in-person courses may qualify for a waiver reducing tuition to the resident rate. Tuition schedule and footnotes

Confirm your classification and any waiver before budgeting. The catalog also warns that additional course- or program-related charges can fall outside its estimates. Ask for a written estimate that separates CBE courses, any other coursework and additional charges. The published CBE rate alone does not establish your full remaining cost.

Four answers to get before you decide

  • Which of my documented learning meets the applied-credit requirement, and how would I complete any gap?

  • What exact courses and total credits remain after evaluation?

  • Which remaining courses are available in CBE, and when can I take the others?

  • What tuition classification, waiver decision and additional charges will apply to my plan?

SHSU’s admissions page explains how to submit transcripts and training information for review. Ask the university to resolve these questions before you commit to a timeline or budget.

If you are still organizing your goals and prior credits, use the free Credit to Degree finder as a general starting point. It does not evaluate SHSU eligibility or award transfer credit. SHSU must determine how your records apply to its program.
