WGU and SNHU offer two different ways to finish an online business bachelor's degree. WGU uses competency-based study within six-month terms. SNHU uses scheduled eight-week online courses with weekly assignments. For a transfer student, the better starting point depends on how prior courses apply, which business requirements remain and what study rhythm is sustainable.
This guide compares WGU's BS Business Management with SNHU's BS Business Administration, general track. It is a comparison of models, not an overall ranking of the universities. If you are still building a shortlist, start with our online business degree completion comparison.

Quick answer: which model should you investigate first?
Investigate WGU first if you want to move through material by demonstrating mastery, can organize independent study and are ready to settle outside-transfer plans before starting. Familiar material may take less time, but difficult assessments and a busy life can still extend the number of paid terms.
Investigate SNHU first if recurring weekly deadlines help you stay on track and you prefer planning around individual eight-week courses. Your course load and the sequence of remaining requirements still determine the schedule; structured courses do not automatically mean a slower finish.
For either school, get the remaining degree plan before comparing price. A transfer ceiling, an institutional minimum and your actual remaining work are three different things.
WGU and SNHU side by side
Program, policy, learning-model and tuition sources are linked in the sections below. Rates are before aid, employer benefits or individual discounts. Institutional “residency” here means study through the degree-awarding school, not living on campus.
WGU's current BS Business Management guide, version 202605, lists 110 competency units across 36 courses. Its curriculum covers business functions and management, ending with a Business Management Capstone Written Project built around a business plan. Use the current program version when requesting an evaluation; do not assume that an older WGU checklist describes the degree you would enter. WGU program guide
SNHU's online BS Business Administration requires 120 credits. This comparison uses the general track rather than a specialized concentration. The program page shows business coursework such as accounting, business law, finance, marketing, management and BUS 400: Driving Business Opportunities. Request the exact major, general education and elective requirements in your entry catalog. SNHU business program
The different totals do not establish which degree has less work left for you. A prior course may fill a named requirement at one school and only an elective at the other. Compare the list of unmet requirements, including the final project or culminating course, before comparing the number at the bottom.
Transfer credit: what will actually apply?
WGU: finish transfer planning before you start
WGU evaluates official records against its program requirements. Its undergraduate policy permits transfer of up to 75% of a program, subject to program-specific rules, and says transfer credit is not awarded after the initial term begins and studies have started. An unofficial transcript review is not an official WGU evaluation. WGU undergraduate transfer policy
WGU separately requires at least 25% of the degree's competency units through the active WGU program, with the required capstone also applying. This is a floor, not a promise that only that amount remains. Ask the evaluator to identify every course still required. WGU residency policy
If you are considering Sophia or Study.com, WGU names these providers in its transfer process. That does not approve every course for this degree. Confirm the exact course equivalency and current program version, then have the required official records delivered before the applicable start deadline. WGU transfer process
SNHU: examine the degree audit and major requirements
SNHU allows up to 90 transfer credits toward a bachelor's degree. At least 30 credits must be completed through SNHU, including at least 12 in the major. The 12 major credits are within the 30-credit minimum, not 12 added on top. Course applicability still determines whether your remaining plan is larger than that minimum. SNHU transfer policy
SNHU also identifies Sophia and Study.com as alternative-credit options. These credits share the overall transfer ceiling; they do not create an extra allowance beyond 90. Its guidance tells current students to consult their adviser before pursuing credit for prior learning. Obtain approval for the specific provider, course and unmet requirement before spending money or time. SNHU credit for prior learning
For either school, ask which courses were accepted, which were applied to the selected degree, and which do not reduce remaining requirements. Do not subtract your total earned credits from 120—or from WGU's competency-unit total—to predict your finish. Read accepted credits vs applied credits and what a transfer credit evaluation tells you.
What studying could feel like
WGU: manage your pace within a term
WGU students work with a program mentor and course instructors. The guide describes both objective assessments and performance tasks, including exams, papers and projects. Relevant knowledge can help you progress, but work experience by itself does not waive a course. You must meet its requirements or receive applicable transfer credit. WGU program guide
A useful self-check: when work or family responsibilities interrupt study, can you rebuild a weekly plan without relying on a recurring class deadline? Competency-based does not mean easy, unsupported or free of progress expectations.
SNHU: organize your week around course deadlines
SNHU's online undergraduate terms last eight weeks, with six terms per year. Students typically take one or two courses at a time. There are no required live lectures or set class meeting times, but coursework follows weekly modules; most assignment deadlines fall on Thursday or Sunday. Its online experience can include discussions, papers, quizzes and group projects. SNHU student experience
That combination may suit someone who wants flexibility about when to study during the week and recurring deadlines to organize around. It still requires independent work. Ask for the workload and assignment pattern of the courses you actually need, especially if you work irregular shifts or cannot reliably study near deadlines.
Cost: compare the billing model with a credible plan
WGU charges by six-month term. The published Business Management rate is $3,850 tuition plus a $200 e-books and resources fee, or $4,050 per term. The posted October 1, 2026 tuition schedule retains the $3,850 program rate. Your number of paid terms is the key variable. Current tuition and fee · October tuition schedule
SNHU charges by credit. Its published 2026–27 online undergraduate rate is $354 per credit: a three-credit course costs $1,062 in tuition. The published conferral fee is $100; course materials vary. Your remaining applicable credits are the key tuition variable. SNHU online tuition and fees
One illustration: change the assumptions, change the comparison
The WGU budget rises $4,050 with another term. The SNHU budget rises $2,124 with six additional credits. Even with the same starting transcript, the decision could change when an official audit identifies more required courses or a sustainable pace requires more terms.
These figures assume unchanged rates, standard charges and no discounts. They exclude SNHU course materials, outside-credit purchases, transcript charges and any other individual expenses; they do not subtract aid or employer benefits. They are not total-cost promises. Neither billing model proves which school will cost you less. Replace the illustration's inputs with each school's written remaining plan and fee estimate.
When to investigate each school first
WGU may be the more useful first conversation if you:
Want assessment-based progression and can protect regular independent study time.
Have relevant knowledge you are prepared to demonstrate, without assuming it earns automatic credit.
Can complete transfer planning before enrollment and want to test a realistic term budget.
SNHU may be the more useful first conversation if you:
Prefer weekly course deadlines to organize study around work and family.
Want to plan a manageable course load across scheduled eight-week terms.
Want a course-by-course tuition estimate tied to an official remaining-credit plan.
You can ask both schools for evaluations. Investigating one first does not make it the right final choice.
What could change the comparison?
The official audit. Major requirements, elective placement, prerequisites and duplicate-credit treatment can matter more than the accepted-credit total.
Your sustainable workload. Assessment revisions, a demanding course or a change in work hours can alter the pace you can maintain. Ask how pauses, repeats and incomplete work affect both scheduling and charges.
The outside-credit plan. A provider's availability does not establish degree applicability. Timing is particularly consequential at WGU; get any SNHU plan approved before starting outside work, too.
Your next destination. If an employer or graduate program has particular coursework, grading or credential expectations, ask that organization directly whether the proposed degree meets them.
The entry date and catalog. Confirm current tuition, fees, required courses and their availability for your intended start. An advertised completion time cannot predict your transfer-student schedule.
Questions to ask both schools
Request written answers for the exact program and entry catalog:
How many of my credits apply to this degree, and which count only as electives or do not apply?
Which business, general education and final-project requirements remain?
Which remaining courses must I complete through your school, and how do the institutional and major rules overlap?
Are the exact Sophia, Study.com or other outside courses I am considering applicable, and when must records arrive?
What is a sustainable course or competency-unit plan for my available study time? Which prerequisites or course schedules affect it?
What tuition, required fees and materials should I budget under that plan, including a slower-pace alternative?
What official records do you need, when will the evaluation be ready, and what remains provisional until then?
